The picture is a little fuzzy because I had my phone camera zoomed all the way out. You really don’t want to disturb a snapping turtle when she is laying eggs.

Once on a bicycle ride in Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, which is in the floodplain of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, my husband, two of our friends, and I came upon a large snapping turtle sitting in the middle of the asphalt road used by drivers to get to the confluence. One of our friends worried that the turtle would be run over, so he found a long stick and prodded the turtle to encourage it to move off the road. The turtle reared up on the back legs and jumped up a couple of feet while grabbing the stick in the beak! I had no idea snapping turtles could jump like that - and it gave me one more reason to enjoy them from afar.
