As autumn comes to close and winter chill inches forward I cannot help but think of spring - of starting seeds and dreams of new green leaves even as it rains the last bits of orange.
I usually have some containers by my main/side door and I have been thinking that in addition to my usual Basil and Rosemary that I want to try growing Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) since it is quite aggressive so container growing would be ideal. It struck me it might be fun to have my main door containers filled with herbs and plants loved by the spirits such as Vervain (Verbena officinalis). What wondrous herbs do you find our less visible friends like?
Perhaps a little adjacent to your inquiry, but it’s how I relate to it, I love to grow lots and lots of Parsley because it is food for the Black Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars. I like to think of butterflies as fae, so planting host foods invites them in, as well as feeds me too.
I’m also now drawn to thinking of Spring, especially during this warm spell in New England. Any time I plant anything, I try to think as native as possible. I hate seeing native species struggling as non-native plants and animals take over. Glancing at your profile, Butterfly Milkweed is native to your area and attracts lots of butterflies. I always have 2 or 3 butterfly and bee friendly plants.
Hello all! And Bright Blessings!! I again apologize for not corresponding sooner but as I just returned again from one of my “Nature Journeys” and let me say I fully understand. My herb and vegetable garden are constantly under siege, I did make some great finds in the everglades this week though, check it out…Found tons of prickly lettuce, Red and violet thistle, and some early Lavender. Even made new friend with some local carpenter ants. Ill share my story in summary when I’m done putting to my journal.
