Signs of Spring

I saw the first daffodils blooming this past week, and it reminded me that they are one of my signs that spring is here.

What are the first signs of spring in your area, or in your memory of other areas you’ve been in during your life?

Checking in from WV! Bloodroot has finally appeared!

Eastern Newts have been extremely active in our vernal ponds, as have Wood, Mountain Chorus, and Spring Peeper Frogs!

Spotted Salamander eggs are finally appearing!

A little tough to see, but if you look closely at the center, you’ll see a Common Snapping Turtle! They are finally emerging in time for their mating season!

Ours are just starting to grow. We’ve had a bitterly cold winter. This is a welcome sign of the Spring very near!

the first thing that happens is the chinese lillies sprout in january. they always bloom by imbolc.

then within a week of imbolc the bradford pears start blooming.

2-3 weeks after imbolc the daffodils sprout and bloom.

now most of the deciduous trees are sprouting new leaves. they’re small and bright green. the recent windstorms have blown off a lot of the bradford pear flowers. the daffodil flowers are already gone.

i saw hummingbirds all through winter this time. i hadn’t seen that before i planted my native garden.

One of the first signs that I watch for in my area are the dogwood trees. Their blooms start appearing before the daffodils, which signal to me the start of spring. Shortly after come the violets, daffodils, and redbuds- then the hummingbirds arrive!

The picture is a little fuzzy because I had my phone camera zoomed all the way tout. You really don’t want to disturb a snapping turtle when she is laying eggs.

In the second photo you can see where she has dug up the earth with her hind feet to create a nest.
